January ALMM List- 14 New Manufacturers, 6 From Gujarat

Highlights :

  • BHEL, with a capacity of 214 MW enters the list for the first time.
  • The list continues to be an all Indian affair, with no foreign module maker making it to the list

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released the latest AMM (Approved list of module manufacturers) for January 2023,and the list of manufacturers continues to grow. 14 new manufacturers make an entry in January, notably BHEL with a 214 MW approved capacity or its plant at Bengaluru.

The only other notable entrants to the list are Gujarat based firms Credence Solar with a 120 MW capacity, and Atmanirbhar Solar with a 100MW capacity. Credence incidentally joins Waaree Energies as the only manufacturer with 650Wpanels approved for use domestically.

That takes the total approved capacity nationwide to almost 21 GW now.

What is interesting is the plethora of new entrants with capacities as small as 14 MW (Ameya Solar And Semiconductor) in Andhra Pradesh, to the first manufacturer in Jharkhand (Abhishek Solar) with 25 MW capacity. Not only do these late entrants seem to have a plan in mind to be entering so late, but the inclusion surely indicates that the government has little intention to loosen up the rules for exemptions for module use outside ALMM, anytime soon.

The ALMM list has been a declared non-tariff barrier used to promote domestic manufacturers, and to that extent, the continued absence of any foreign made module manufacturer is no surprise.

Gujarat’s continued strengthening of an already dominant role continues, with the six new additions. It is a dominance that will become a strangehold in time as large capacity expansions from existing players and new entrants like Reliance take shape in the state. Of a total projected capacity of over 40 GW  by year end, we expect over 70% to be housed in Gujarat.
