NTPC Tenders For Hydrogen Fuel Cell Projects In Its Premises

One of India’s largest integrated power generating companies under the Ministry of Power, NTPC has issued a global Expression of Interest (EOI) tender to set up two Hydrogen fuel cell-based pilot projects in its premises only.

One of the two is a standalone Fuel-Cell based backup power system and the other is a standalone fuel-cell-based microgrid system with hydrogen production using an electrolyzer at NTPC premises.

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has announced today that NTPC is looking to further strengthen its footprint in the green and clean fuel sector by setting up these pilot projects. The power generating company is looking for collaborations for implementation and further commercialization of the projects.

This is in line with NTPC’s initiatives towards adopting Hydrogen technologies. The company has already started a pilot for making methanol integrating carbon captured from power plant flue gas and hydrogen from electrolysis. This is a potential solution towards “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” in the field of carbon capture and green hydrocarbon synthesis said MoP in a statement.

NTPC is exploring the use of Hydrogen based Fuel Cells-Electrolyser systems for backup power requirements. Currently, the backup power requirement and microgrid applications are being met from diesel-based power generators. Looking at these as an early adopter use case of Hydrogen based technologies, NTPC is working towards creating solutions that are a green alternative to Diesel Generators.

Additionally, NTPC today announced that its 200 KW Waste to Energy (24 TPD) plant is operational at Karsada, Varanasi.

Recently this month, NTPC has granted the ‘Letter of Award’ to Tata Power Solar, India’s largest integrated solar company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power to build 210 MWp of Solar PV projects. The total order value of the projects was approximately Rs 686 crore, while its commissioning date has been set for November 2022.

Earlier in May this year, MoP had announced that NTPC’s groundwater rejuvenation project in Mouda, Maharashtra is helping over 150 villages to defeat the water crisis around its operational area.
